Finding The Right Therapist For You
There are so many counselors! There are good ones and bad ones at all different levels and specialties. Even seeing a great therapist doesn’t necessarily mean they will be a great fit for you. How does anyone go about picking a good therapist?
The number one predictor of therapeutic success is the strength of the connection between the patient and therapist. This realization means that finding someone that you connect with is paramount in finding the healing and perspective you are seeking.
There are many different types of therapy, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Family Systems and also Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. I practice psychodynamic psychotherapy which pays close attention to not only family of origin and attachment issues but also what kind of relationship we are forming and its impact on you feeling more freed up or more restricted.
Also something worth noting is the importance you put on whether or not you need a therapist who is culturally informed or possibly spiritually sensitive. I see a diverse group of folks, many of whom want to process a lack of connection to themselves or others based on family of origin issues, trauma or pain connected to systemic inequities.
It is important to feel comfortable with your therapist and feel like you can deepen in with them over time. The work of therapy can have tremendous rewards but I have found that it takes a cocktail of trust and vulnerability to get there. We spend so much of our lives trying to move around problematic issues and my work focuses on moving through these issues together. What is typically on the other side of such courageous, engaged action is a more connected, authentic and whole life.
